What is a Session?

All Costa Code usage happens in a 5 hour session window:
  • That window starts from your first prompt and ends exactly 5 hours later. We call this time window a session.
  • After a session ends, a new one automatically starts the next time you send a prompt.
  • At the start of each month, your available sessions reset.

Points Allowance

Each session comes with a points allowance based on your pricing tier. Every action you take — like generating code, applying edits, or running commands — uses points. When your points for a session run out, you can continue to code by using costa/free REMINDER: add link to costa free page For more information about how points work, see our Points page. For more details on session counts, pricing, and tiers, see our Pricing page.

Why Sessions matter

Unlock Smarter Insights

Costa analyzes threads from sessions — prompts, context, tool calls, and outcomes — securely and privately, to surface what actually moved the needle. Over time, this data reveals which workflows work, which agents perform best, and how teams build momentum with AI-assisted coding.

Ensure Smooth Performance

Have you ever been stuck in a conversation that you knew it was going nowhere? Coding is like that sometimes too. Some of the most expensive model calls (i.e. high context length) are actually the least valuable. Sessions help us balance usage across providers, models and people. With our highest tier plans, we find people rarely hit session limits.

Prevent API Abuse

Our sessions and points are designed to give engineers on our Max plan the feeling of near unlimited assisted coding. But Costa Code is designed for humans that are using AI to make themselves better coders, not for agents running 24/7 without humans in the loop.
